To take somebody for a ride:
Literally – To take somebody for a short excursion or outing for pleasure,
‘They took us for a ride in their boat’.
Figurative – To take somebody for a ride – To deceive, duped, cheat or trick somebody, often used in the passive -To be taken for a ride – To be deceived, duped or tricked.
‘You paid three thousand euros for that second-hand car. It’s not worth half. You’ve been taken for a ride.’
